The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has mandated a new lower global standard for marine fuels from 1st January 2020.

Europe already has experience of low sulphur fuels in the Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) where a sulphur content limit of 0.1% was introduced in January 2015. However, this new global limit from 2020 will affect some 70,000 ships across the world and is rightly described as a 'game changer' for the maritime industry, with exhaust gas cleaning equipment sold out for the foreseeable future and compliant fuel not only expensive but with adequate supplies very much in doubt.
